Magazine design | this is not normal
background
This Is Not Normal is a fun, exciting magazine featuring the unexplainable to unbelievable. Articles based in pseudosciences will encourage readers to explore and question their own beliefs and stretch their imagination. The target audience are people of all ages and all genders who are curious and open minded to all possibilities. People interested and excited by the unexplainable and explainable.
design process
This is Not Normal magazine has a fun and engaging feel. I started with brainstorming articles that could be included that were neither too scary or offensive to anyone. Once the vibe was set I combed the internet for free use images or images that I came up with myself. The quarterly covers are a collection of old photos that have an eerie, humorous tone. The Tea Lady and the Balloon Figure were photoshopped images I created. Color Palette is simple and so are the typefaces with consideration since the images are very impactful.
design solution
For this project I used a combination of InDesign for the articles and Photoshop for the images. Masthead logo was designed with typeface citrus gothic shadow, with decreased tracking. The color palette is simple using only black, white, and splashes of red (CMYK: 15/100/100/5). The typefaces chosen are easy to read with some punchier types for headings. The graphics were found on wikimedia commons altering if necessary. Numerology article was found online and credited to the author. The ghost stories were found online and retold by myself. All illustrations were done by myself that I feel give the magazine a gritty texture. The articles are fun and encourage exploration.
