Movie poster | Cinder
background
Cinder is a sci-fi fantasy book series by Marissa Meyers based on a female protagonist who is both a mechanic and cyborg. The story is loosely based on the fairy tale Cinderella, with a gritty filter. We follow Cinder as she resolves to save the planet from a tyrannical mind controlling villain on a warpath to control Earth. The target audience is teens to young adults who enjoy the Lunar Chronicles book series and those interested in fantasy sci-fi with strong female role model.
design process
For instant recognition from the fans of the book series I kept the movie poster similar to the original book cover using the red heel and leg. The background needed a big city with a dystopian feel. The typeface should stay similar to the book in large scale with a complementary typeface for the actors.
design solution
Using Photoshop I layered the woman’s leg with a mechanical leg and fitting that into a red pump with shadows underneath. The leg is centered in front of a brightly colored cityscape where a moody blue filter was placed giving it a wet, cold, dystopian feel that was present in the climax of the novel. The bright moon looms in the sky where the setting of the next books start taking place as the story continues to unfold hinting at the plans for the movie series to continue. The typeface for the title is LeKick, and the subheadings are Carta Marina. The movie credit block is Steel Tongs. In the mobile version the leg asset is removed entirely as well as the credit block and replaced with links. The desktop version has clickable links on either side of the leg balanced and equally placed. Both have the hamburger menu for further navigation.
